The difference between Botox and Dermal Fillers

Botox® is the brand name for botulinum toxin, a highly effective and safe way to treat forehead lines, frown lines and eye wrinkles. It  has been used for over 30 years without any long-term problems.   Wrinkles appear in the skin as a result of progressive loss of elasticity due to aging, and also due to contraction of muscles in the upper portion of the face.  Botox® can be injected into those muscles causing weakness which softens the lines of facial expression.

A Dermal Filler is a substance which is gently injected into the skin to smooth out lines and wrinkles, and make skin firmer. The fillers we use are composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally occurring in the skin, plumping the lines that have developed due to a loss of natural elasticity.  The filler itself looks like a crystal clear thick gel and is also injected into the skin. However, muscles are not the target of this gel - wrinkles are. The gel is injected underneath the line of the wrinkle to lift and flatten it and also to replace lost volume in the skin such as in the cheeks or the lips. The results from fillers are instant and improve further over a period of two weeks as the gel itself actually absorbs water and plumps up.

What is Botox?

BOTOX is the brand name given to Botulinum Toxin type A. It was first refined and used cosmetically by a company named Allergan. It works by blocking nerve impulses that trigger wrinkle-causing muscle contractions, This smoothes out wrinkles and lines and makes the skin look fresher and more importantly, YOUNGER!

It has been used cosmetically for over 30 years now and millions of treatments have
been undertaken showing how safe and effective it is. The medicinal form of botox is extremely dilute and very safe when injected correctly by medically qualified practitioners. Some say it is a 'poison'. This is technically correct, but in medicinal form it is extremely dilute and almost impossible to cause significant harm when injected for cosmetic use.
